Something I have noticed about my writing is that I leave very little time for an "opening snapshot" in my stories. My inciting incident usually occurs in the first chapter, maybe the second.

Is that rushing in too quickly? Should I leave more space for build up?

It depends heavily on genre and what pacing you think works best for your story. If you throw the inciting incident in early, it's immediate tension and intrigue, but if you're trying to play with audience expectations putting it a little later could be great.
