I finished the 5th book of this year's Canada Reads selection. Shut Up, You’re Pretty, by Téa Mutonji. The book is a series of short stories that explores the coming of age of a young Congolese woman, Loli, who has just arrived in Canada with her family.

This is a book that brings up many tough subjects, including sex work, abortion, drug use, and alcohol, but mostly about a young woman and how she sees herself through the male gaze as Loli tries to find herself. Fairly gritty and raw.

I had to sit with this for a while. In the end, I connected slightly with Loli because of some of my personal experiences while I was young, but it was very much a stretch as I did not have the same life as Loli. One may not connect but this will be the experience of many young women.

I believe a second reading will reveal more to the reader.

The theme of this year was, a book to carry us forward.
With that, my personal choices are:
1. In first place, The Future, by Catherine Leroux
2. Denison Avenue, by Christina Wong
3. Bad Cree, by Jessica Johns
4. Shut Up, You’re Pretty, by Téa Mutonji
5. Meet Me At the Lake, by Carley Fortune

I adored Denison Avenue, but The Future had a little more to offer in a story about carrying us forward.

As always what stories you love are personal.
