Spriends I was talking art museums with Linda this morning and was wondering , what’s your favorite painting or exhibit that you’ve seen in person??? 🖼️
Linda Eisenstein @LindaEisenstein
Stopped at the Museum to see Monet in Focus: 3 paintings on loan from the Musée Marmottan + 2 from Cleveland's collection, including a crown jewel: the huge Water Lilies that usually dominates the Impressionist room. I'll never forget seeing the whole triptych together here. More in ALT-TEXT

Great question!
1. Caravaggio's The Beheading of St John the Baptist at the Co-Cathedral, Malta - I didn't know it lived there - had *just* been cleaned + back in place. Almost no one else in the room - literal jaw-drop, I was dazed

2. Rothko - I didn't understand the paintings until I saw them in person, then it was like a blinding lightning flash.

There are/or at least have been several of his at SFMOMA, I didn’t appreciate them early on as much as I do now. Last summer we saw the two person play about him, “Red”

4. Lucian Freud's massive paintings. Another I didn't understand at all until seeing the work up close - so very different from even high-quality reproductions in a book. I'm a long-time reader of critic Robert Hughes' work, so I took his advice and went to this exhibit - loved it.

3. 'Gallipoli: The Scale of Our War' created/built by Weta Workshop. Astonishing, deeply moving, unforgettable.
