Short version, monasteries had hourly prayers (vespers, compline, lauds, etc.), which is why they invented the clock, but that's another story. Prayers for the 9th hour (from dawn, so 3 in the afternoon) were called Nonces (Latin 9). When the church re-ordered prayers Nonces were moved to midday
