#bookreview #bookrecommendation LEAVING by Roxana Robinson. Definitely a book for adults that’s a roller coaster of emotions, unrequited love and family relationships, with a cloud of absence hanging over all. Also appearing—Bella, the most prescient, loyal, endearing dog since Six-Thirty.

Sarah and Warren grew up together and became college sweethearts, contemplating marriage until Sarah began questioning Warren’s suitability as husband material. She opted for charming, ambitious Rob instead and unceremoniously dumped Warren over the phone.

Fast forward 40 years and Sarah and Warren run into each other at the Met during a “Tosca” intermission, in a prime example of the prevalent foreshadowing. Opera references abound and this is a classic operatic story of honor and passion, with tension building as you await tragedy.

By the time they reunite, Sarah has divorced Rob and lives in rural Westchester with her dog. She is devoted to an all-volunteer local museum and has a somewhat distant relationship with her daughter, who is consumed by her husband, job and two children, and her son who lives across the country.

Warren is a prominent architect living in Boston. He is married, to an annoying, vapid socialite, and has one allegedly adult daughter, Elektra (!), who turns out to be a really spoiled brat.

Warren and Sarah pick up where they left off.

Although Sarah seems content with her life, she realizes she misjudged Warren and falls back in love with him, while Warren, who never got over Sarah, admits his marriage is not really a happy one.

Warren leaves his wife and plans a future with Sarah until Elektra throws a toddler-like tantrum and then lashes out like a a teenage girl. Warren caves and goes back to his wife, because that is the honorable thing to do.

We then watch Sarah and Warren try to cope with their new/old reality until an ending that, although you know is coming, is shocking.

At one point Warren observes that
“music is emotion made audible” and this novel is very much a long form libretto.

The author, a writing professor, skillfully tells the story right up to the carefully constructed ending.

This book won’t appeal to everyone, especially if you’re down or going through a rough patch. It definitely is not a feel-good story, but if you are up for the ride you’ll be rewarded.
