It's incredibly frustrating when you share an experience of racism with someone who is also a person of color, only to have them dismiss it or make excuses. As a Black person, you already have to constantly fight against the systemic racism embedded in our society.

The last thing you should have to deal with is your own community denying or downplaying the very real discrimination we face.
Whether it's someone claiming they "didn't know" you were Black, or trying to rationalize the racist behavior you encountered, this type of response is unacceptable.

Just because these individuals may benefit from proximity to whiteness or be in denial about their own internalized biases, does not give them the right to invalidate our experiences.
We deserve to be believed and supported, not have our valid concerns brushed aside.

Our people should have your back, not make you feel like the problem is "all in your mind." Racism is a pernicious, pervasive issue that harms us all, and we have to be willing to confront it, even within our own communities.
It takes courage to speak up about the mistreatment you've faced.

Don't let anyone's defensiveness or refusal to acknowledge the reality of anti-Black racism make you feel like you're overreacting. Trust your instincts and maintain your resolve to fight for the dignity and fair treatment your community deserves. Your voice and your experience matter.
