I didn't realise until recently that America's default is cars. We have trams here, as well as low speed limits within about 6kms of the CBD, meaning that public transport is faster & therefore preferable. Pedestrian access is paramount.

I’m especially nervous about self driving trucks.

I don't want a self driving car, either. They would, of course, depend on the work of programmers. I know programmers. They are not perfect. I would never trust my life to software.

I would settle for reliably-scheduled public transit. And that actually services the city, not just those who funnel downtown.

Our vacation last summer in Spain was a real eye-opener. High speed rail runs several times a day between all the major cities, which also have extensive and reliable metro systems. We traveled in and between Barcelona, Madrid, and Sevilla without a car - never needed or wanted one.

I should mention that where they do have car parks in central Madrid, they’ve built them underground.
