Trump's trial in NYC starts in a few days. If he is convicted, we will witness a total collapse of the GOP.

Don't set your sights too high. Trump's blatant lies will continue to be believed by ardent admirers, though in diminishing numbers.

Don't get my hopes up. They have been dashed entirely too many times over the past 9 years.

But won't a conviction lead to an appeal? And I can't imagine they'll even incarcerate him like the bum he is... It's like being taken up the hill again and again.

Prove the case right the first time, you're spending the appeal in jail.

If convicted, I don't see jail time for him. Maybe..just Maybe a few days, but he'll most likely end up under house arrest at Mar-a-lago. Trump is famous for delays. In the 80's he was sued, and he had it delayed for over 14 years that a judge, a lawyer, and the original lead plaintiffs died.

I do hope you are correct. But just how will a Trump conviction destroy the GOP? I don’t see it, and I saw the rolling back of abortion and contraceptive rights in 2000. I was laughed at then when I told people it was coming.

Some seem to think a party named "Republican," is somehow an immutable part of American politics; not so, just ask the ten political parties that preceded it. The ideas upon which the GOP has relied are now kaput & a Lincoln-promised, American-led renaissance ("a new birth of freedom") has begun.

And really, I do wish folks would realize the true betrayal of the GOP was actually in 1876, when they cut a deal to get the White House by ending Reconstruction.

Exactly right ... the only difficulty being to figure out, in the aftermath of the fall of the GOP, what comes after it.

I haven't a clue myself.

What do you mean IF he's convicted. It's definitely WHEN.

However, it's doubtful he will get prison time. I'm certain it will be a slap on the wrist per usual.

Nah. If he gets convicted I got real money that he becomes MORE popular within the GOP. Hopefully LESS popular in the country though.

Which parts of the GOP exactly? The aging Boomer voters whom they've killed off with COVID incompetence? The MAGA cult who never had the numbers they like to pretend they had? The quieter ones who know Trump is nothing but an albatross now?

Also, there's the fact that he's not immortal.

And the republicans having ceded all their money to trump and his lawyers will have nothing to build back with, they'll be luck to clear away the debris.

They'll build back into something viable but we're looking at 10 years minimum, probably 15 to 20. He smashed up a lot of what still worked after all.

And also Trump himself. Given the massive amount of evidence he's left lying around, professionalism of both prosecutor and judge involved and incompetence of the Broken Orange Man's defense team, I'd call the conviction a mortal lock of a bet.
