I find it tough to look at this photo from April 2014 in Nigeria—ten years before today, pub day for the paperback edition of THE KNEELING MAN.

The person looking at herself doesn’t know who she is, and she KNOWS that. She wants to keep it that way.

But something happens.

The story she’s running from—the one she thinks she’s evading with constant travel, tennis lessons, lunches, and a disordered diet (another story)—catches up with her that year.

She doesn’t know it, but by the end of that year, she’ll be living in Tahoe. And facing demons.

By the end of that year, she’ll be talking about writing a book—the one she planned to start in 2010, but ran from.

People will begin to ask her if she’s a writer. She won’t say yes, even though she’s bought a writing desk that she keeps in a box in her garage.

So she tells them that her writing career, like the desk, is still in the box.

Eventually, she opens the box. She ends up attending a writing workshop, where someone gives her this pin.

She takes the message on the pin to heart and gets to work. Today, ten years later, that work is on the shelf in hardcover and now paperback.

To the lost woman in the mirror: I’m glad you stopped running.
