The population of #Arizona Territory in 1870 was 9658. The 2nd Gov. (Gurley) who had spent part of 1864 in the "Hellscape" of #AZ territory had designated himself the "Territorial Representative" and returned to DC and never returned. "Acting Gov" McCormick who's personal life shaped the law.

McCormick's first wife and child both died a complicated delivery of a late term baby. He became obsessive about the safety of babies and is noted to have written and spoken about it often. He was also obsessive about "eliminating" the Apache and most other native people in his territory to...

make "Safety and Commerce" for his settler (White) community paramount. He vehemently opposed and sabotaged President Grant's effort to negotiate a peace with the Apache and was gleeful to "resume the rightous effort" to destroy them by military means. He felt all white women were "obligated" to...

help populate his territory with white babies and supported laws banning all abortions, and paid bounties for the birth of "healthy white children" to encourage women to become impregnated. Yes. #Scottsdale area people living in #McCormickRanch and by 1880 AZ population exceeded 40K.

He also wrote a fascinating book about Crimea, which he had visited in his early 20's. In that book he discusses extensively the positive impact on the local population of programs to exterminate the unwanted peoples, and forced-natalist policies to repopulate with the desired white babies.

He also used his pre-AZ time on Wall Street well. He was involved in hundreds of fascinating and complicated land deals, mining rights swaps and water rights plans. Hard to say what was fair or not in many of them, but he ALWAYS walked away richer, not always so for others in the deal.

Thought the women who in 14 days will once again be living a #Hellscape of #Arizona might appreciate a bit of the context. It was part of the Have-More-White-Babies-and-Kill-Apache policy. Perhaps, like the 2nd Gov, you will choose to flee the Hellscape and never return. BTW the 1st gov ... died.

I should note that is the population as taken by the US Census. They did not consider any of the thousands of native peoples, and it is likely they only counted a percentage of the thousands of latinos.

Not that this thread has picked up much interest. But in fairness to fate I tried to find an old article I remember about the Romney Flake and McCormick family's strange interactions in the 1870s/80s. Found this instead. Close. https://commonplace.online...
