After being self-employed full time for 25 years, I needed to step away and scale back for medical reasons. I returned to undergrad and got a barista job in 2015. I graduated in 2019 yet remain part-time at the coffee shop.
When I started my wage was 50 cents above minimum, $13.50 at the time.

With periodic mandated increases in San Francisco, that gradually and incrementally climbed. Combined with infinitesimal annual merit pay increases, last month I was making $19.95/hr., $1.88 above SF’s $18.07 minimum.
With the new CA law, I now make $20/hr., the same as any new hire.

The same as people I have trained. Even with the company valuing one year’s experience at a paltry 15 cents, it felt like something. Now it feels like I’ve gotten a pay cut, while they’ve raised prices at least twice since my last raise.
