The ordinary Haitian is much like the ordinary person in any other country. They want the same things as anyone else. Safety and peace. A chance to earn a living. A chance to improve their lives. A place to send their kids to school in safety so they can become educated. Safety to go shopping.

A chance to get medical care from trained professionals working in clean, secure buildings. The peace to take a taxi or bus or tap-tap to get from one place to the other. A chance to save and invest and plan for the future.

But the interests of foreign nations override those hopes.

The money and guns pouring in to Haiti from the United States under the benign neglect theory of "let them destroy themselves" is directly causing the misery of Haitians.

It's a terrible problem made worse by the policies of the United States to let the guns flow in but keep the people bottled up.

I don't have an answer to the problem other than the simplistic one of "stop the importation of guns and ammunition." Because that won't stop the chaos.

It will just let it continue.

Haiti is not by nature incapable of self-government. It cannot, however, govern itself when powerful nations interfere with its self-governance as has been done since their independence from France in 1804.

(France saddled Haiti with an impossible debt for the temerity of winning their freedom, and the United States backed that debt by invading Haiti to get the gold in Haitian banks. You should look it up.)
