White men here need to do better at staying in our lane. In the last 24 hours alone I’ve seen white men:
- arguing for their right to disagree with BBIMPs about what is racism
- calling white women racist for adhering to norms rooted in misogyny
- calling out white women for their voting record

The first of those is standard-issue white foolishness that comes up way too often here. We need to shut that down, and more broadly, white men need to stop centering ourselves. Our perspectives aren’t unique or valuable to the topic, so our voices don’t need to be heard in every conversation.

The latter two are straight-up misogyny disguised as “allyship.” White men are not the right messengers for calling out white women for harms that have their roots in misogynist patriarchy. We are definitely not the right folks to be criticizing anyone’s voting patterns.

Is it possible that some racist white women adhere to traditional gender roles to secure their place in society? Sure, but when white men, who as a group caused the harm they’re avoiding by doing so, call them out for it, it sounds a lot more like victim shaming to deflect blame from ourselves.

This is all a long way of saying that on social media, there’s a tendency to share how we’re feeling and what we think about everything. But sometimes when we do that on topics on which we have no relevant lived experience, we just crowd out the good conversation that could be happening instead.

Are these real accounts? Because NOTHING here is inviting to Twitter Neanderthals.

Yeah, they were real accounts. Some of them (the first category) were longtime shitty trolls on everything to do with race. The folks in the second category were, unfortunately, people who I know generally have their hearts in the right place, but probably need to think harder before posting.
