Yep. And The VI still celebrates its Emancipation Day July 3. 1848 when we were owned by Denmark when General Buddhoe led a rebellion on St. Croix. Slave owners were pissed off because they said the Danish Governor didn't have the authority. We were bought by the US in 1917.

Y'all know Juneteenth, but remember, that's about Texas. For many back East, freedom came sooner. For years, Emancipation Day was celebrated in my ancestors' region on April 3, when the Union arrived and Confederates fell in Richmond. In DC, they celebrate a few weeks later.
