It is Arab Heritage Month and I am looking at the history of Arab Canadians in Canada.

Today, it is John Hanna, the first person of Lebanese-descent to play in the NHL!

John Hanna was born in Sydney, Nova Scotia on April 5, 1935.

After playing junior hockey in Trois-Rivieries and Chicoutimi, he signed a professional contract with the New York Rangers.

He debuted with the New York Rangers in 1958-59, earning 11 points in 70 games. He played with the Rangers until 1960-61.

After three years in the AHL, he returned to the NHL with the Montreal Canadiens in 1963-64.

Another four seasons with the Quebec Aces followed, and he returned to the NHL with the Philadelphia Flyers in 1967-68.
He spent the rest of his career in the AHL, WHL and WHA.

In 198 NHL games, he had 32 points. In 66 WHA games, he had 26 points.

He briefly coached the Cleveland Crusaders of the WHA in the 1974-75 season.

In 1980, he was inducted into the Nova Scotia Sport Hall of Fame.

He died of cancer on Nov. 20, 2005.
