The wall-to-wall coverage of the NY trial is so mesmerizing that it can reinforce common (MSM) wisdom that we MUST have a conviction before the election or all will be lost. That perspective has been provoking lots of teeth gnashing.

This morning I listened closely to what Simon Rosenberg (my go-to hope/optimism specialist) had to say on the issue. I transcribed his response to a question about the trials.

I don’t think that we need any convictions this year to win the election. I don’t think we should count on them. We waited for Mueller and that was a mistake.

It prevented us from having a significant conversation with the American people about the penetration of DT and the Rep Party by a hostile foreign power. And we shouldn’t wait for Jack Smith, we shouldn’t wait for prosecutors in NY.

We have these six things…that don’t require conviction for us to be able to talk about in the political arena. In the legal arena is one thing, the political arena is something else.

In the political arena:
Donald Trump raped E.

Donald Trump ended Roe and has staked out the most extreme abortion positions you could possibly stake out;
We don’t need any of these convictions to win this election.

And we have to stop using the idea that our ability to engage on these issues is contingent upon a jury finding him guilty. They aren’t. These things happened; they are facts on the ground. And in the political world these things are fair game.

We’ve spent way too much time thinking about what is going on in court. We need to be thinking about how we are going to win this election. And how we talk to more voters and how we raise more money. That’s where our focus should be.

Him being in court and looking like a small man and a criminal man…is hurting him. When he has to sit there all day long he looks like a criminal. He does not look powerful and strong; he looks pathetic. This is a big problem for him. It hurts his efforts to look like a strong man.

The things they have to do to make him look like a serious presidential candidate again is beyond the ability of a campaign to do. He is this ridiculous figure; the emperor has no clothes…we are learning that this guy is just an actor wearing too much makeup with poofy hair.
