clancy isn't interested in passing the bechdel test as much as actively avoiding any implication that women exist at all. across 387 pages, 3 women have 12 lines. good, because any more than that and we'd certainly have been subjected to listening to them talk about their feelings.

Book was published in 1984. That is the way it was. Less than 10 yrs earlier, a woman buying a car required a man's signature.
