I always felt Hunt for Red October actually had 2 main characters: Ramius and Ryan...

I did like the book and, like you, I hit a certain point when I stopped because Clancy was starting to show signs of needing an editor.

That's rhe one I didn't read. I started with Patriot Games. I read all the way up to the one where Jack becomes President but I forget the title. I can even see the book cover in my head. Maybe Executive Orders. Clancy is too blustery, technical, and long-winded. Liked his characters though.

patriot games is the only other one i've read. it's breezier but the amount of slobbering over charles and diana was a real turn off. clancy is a mediocre-mediocre writer. all the more kudos to you, i don't know that i have the patience to make it as deep as you did into his oeuvre.
