The post I never wanted to write.

On Monday, Emmi crossed the Rainbow Bridge. She had problems with her hips for a while, and over the last couple of weeks, her legs started to go. Finally, she had no strength left and it was time. Over the last few days, Frida barely left her side. /1

Emmi was the first dog that I could say was MY dog. Other dogs I've had were closest to either my mother (when I was a kid) or my wife. She was my constant work companion, usually camped under my desk, and she slept next to me. /2

When I came home from the hospital a few years ago, she was upset that I had been away. She refused to let me get up, pushing me back down onto the couch with her paw. /3

Emmi was also ridiculously smart. She often knew what I was thinking before I thought it. She also had a hell of a sense of humor too. She clowned me on more than one occasion.

There's an Emmi-sized hole in my heart right now.

Goodbye, Emmi. I'll see you on the other side one day.
