I read this book years ago. Maya Angelou went through a lot of hard things that she rose above. Not sure if it was this book or another of her writings but she told about telling a friend who joked about homosexuals to leave a social gathering she hosted (to educate him --her party, her rules).

It was a different book. This one ended with the birth of her son. I need to read her other memoirs.

I read it in my mid-30’s. As an abuse survivor I found much to relate to. Also, I lived in Little Rock in 1969-1970 (high school) and learned some eye-opening things about entrenched racism that I was oblivious to as a white teenager. I’ve also learned about racism seeing the book banned in schools.
