Amen... Long ago, growing up in GI tract housing w/ kids from active military families, our neighborhoods were such a hodge-podge of "nationalities"... Pledging allegiance to the flag brought kids together + instilled a sense of both pride + community...

I'm 76. when I was 6, a nun in school asked us what nationalities we were and I confidently replied, "American". I'm still trying to figure out why so many of the other kids laughed at me. and yes, I'm still an American.

Yes, all of that. I guess they wanted to know who descended from Polish or Irish or whatever, but I still don't understand why it should have mattered.
