I guess he should have foreseen the US government being able to successfully freeze his wife’s assets preventing him from funding his defence 🤦‍♂️.

The ruling seems like it may have missed a very significant element of US citizenship, and how it can automatically be lost (that is, without a formal act or request), which includes applying for citizenship in another country with the *intention* of giving up US citizenship.

Dan’s renunciation of US citizenship in 2016 was likely in response to FATCA and its requirements which can quite significantly restrict the ability of US persons living overseas to access financial services.

It could also quite reasonably have been because of citizenship based taxation and the impossible compliance burdens it can place on US persons living outside of the US (it should be noted that avoiding taxes (that is, double taxation) is not a valid reason for renouncing US citizenship).
