Is that tight knot cedar? Also, why run those furring strips
a) at all?

It's Eastern White Cedar. Not totally sure about the strips (my friend/boss's idea)...think it's cuz it's a timberframed house w/ stress skin panels (OSB plywood on 2 sides of 4" foam) that have breathability issues. The angle's so there's drainage & nailing surface for the vertical t&g boards.
