Can the defendant's lawyer say they can no longer represent the client, that they can't come to terms on how to move forward? Or could the defendant fire the lawyer? Would the judge allow that? It seems like it would be a way for the defendant to delay the trial.

In response to Brian Keith Jackson.
a lawyer can ask the judge for leave to withdraw however the judge has sole discretion to grant or refuse attorney withdraw. usually an attorney is granted withdraw only when it will not materially effect the ongoing proceedings (as in, the client has another attorney lined up to step in).
