Can the defendant's lawyer say they can no longer represent the client, that they can't come to terms on how to move forward? Or could the defendant fire the lawyer? Would the judge allow that? It seems like it would be a way for the defendant to delay the trial.

In response to Brian Keith Jackson.
It is a way to delay, but afaik the lawyer needs permission from the judge to abandon a defendant mid-trial, so at least from that angle it isn't easy.
