Rewatching The Hunger Games movies this week, and let me just say the fascism hits different in 2024. These movies are way better than they get credit for, especially Catching Fire. #CurrentlyWatching

I haven't actually watched the movies, but the books are damn good.

They aren't as good as the books; they lack emotional context for a lot of the relationships, but having read the books, they are fulfilling because you have the deeper understanding of what is happening already.

Susanne Collins really did a fantastic job of depicting the ostentatious cruelty of fascism and the PTSD of child soldiers, I remember reading the books thinking she must have read the scholarly research on those topics.

What has really struck me on this rewatch (and also stuck out in the book because they spend longer on it) is the decadence and the emotional distance of the ultra rich in the Capitol. Ten more years of House Wives and the like make it clear that Collins didn't make that part up.
