Canada has had many famous horses achieve sports greatness.
Tiny Dancer.
Big Ben.

Then there was Hickstead, and this is his story.

Hickstead's rider was Eric Lamaze and together they brought sports glory to Canada.
Hickstead was born on March 2, 1996 in Belgium.

A Dutch Warmblood, he grew to 16 hands.

In 2006, Hickstead won the Nations Cup, followed by the Spruce Meadows Masters Tournament the following year. That same year, Hickstead and Lamaze won silver and bronze at the Pan Am Games.

In 2008, the duo took Gold and Silver at the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing. This was Canada's first gold in equestrian at the Olympics.

In 2010, Hickstead was named Best Horse in the World at the Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games.
Lamaze and Hickstead continued to win championships.

In 2010, they took the Rolex Grand Prix.

The following year, they won the CN International, and placed second at the 2011 FEI World Cup Jumping Final.

That proved to be the last victory of Hickstead.
On Nov. 6, 2011 at a competition in Italy, Hickstead collapsed during an event.

He died of an aortic rupture.

In his career with Lamaze, Hickstead won more than $4 million.

In 2012, Hickstead was honoured with a statue at Spruce Meadows and was inducted into the Spruce Meadows Hall of Fame.
