Indigenous peoples throughout the world are cultivating crops, curating seed banks and planting forests to promote and preserve biodiversity. In fact, they play an outsized role in protecting the environment. Yet they are seldom included in conservation plans.

I don't understand why, and yet, I do. I am someone who looks at the resources around them and optimizes the opportunity their background brings. This isn't hard but the bias and racism is real.

It's about racism but also land rights. Indigenous peoples don't just protect the land, they also have claims to it. Governments at different levels don't want to recognize those claims. But the UN is consulting more with indigenous groups, not enough but moving in the right direction.
