This is a diatom, a single-celled algae, ancient but still plentiful. They live in the oceans and other waters. They produce about 40% of the oxygen on Earth. They have a silicate exoskeleton and a lipid interior, and the trillions of their dead bodies sinking to the ocean floors gave us oil.
