A note on Turkey: it may be free but you don't get to pick what you study. Your national exam scores assign you to a major whether you want to study it or not. I knew a lot of vets who hated animals, engineers who wanted to be architects, etc who were miserable

I want to say it was a 19th century German or French education model that way too many places kept long after the Germans or French moved on 🤔

I think in India it’s mostly because of population and lack of resources/infrastructure.

And probably the same brain drain Turkey had. They were forcing their best and brightest into the economically and structurally critical fields like STEM and medicine because people keep getting poached by US, UAE, UK, EU, etc

Brain drain from India slightly reduced in recent years. It will be interesting to see how the current election in India and coming election in US will shape the future.
