As folks discuss bear/man today, my youngest has texted me twice. Getting to campus, heading home. This is their safety net. I do the same. We track walking/biking routes, transit, send photos of uber drivers, know where, when, who - because it's not an if - but when. And I abhor it needs to be.

I use to follow a guy on TikTok who would take early, early morning walks along a river everyday day.

I stopped because it depressed me. As a woman I would never have the freedom to be do that and be safe.

If I am attacked, everyone asks “why was she walking alone at those times?”
