My dogs usually do a lot of foot action and muffled barks... Knowing them, they're probably up to no good!

My dog, Daisy, would have bad dreams. She would snark and whine. If just talk to her in a southing voice until her dream calmed down.

Dogs dream, cats dream, ferrets dream.

When a pet has what appears to be a nightmare, I don't wake them up, but I do pet them gently, speak to them quietly and soothingly, or pick them up and hold them. (Ferrets tend to sleep DEEPLY, so it's harder to wake them anyway.)

Not sure about ferrets, but I know when dogs have nightmares, it's best not to wake them because of their startle reflex (basically it's an instinct to fly into fight mode just in case they're being attacked). People can get unintentionally bitten
