Thank you Smith family. I graduated from nursing school in 1982. We were assigned 1 CNA and a maximum of 5 patients. This left me time to properly care for my patients, complete all written charting, give the patient a back rub, and get home on time. Now, not the case.

I retired in 2022. By then, the ratio was 1 CNA to 15 patients and 1 nurse to between 12–30 patients. There’s NO WAY to give proper care, much less learn their names.

I say “Never leave a loved one alone in hospital. Families are now a crucial part of the care team.”
