You can find an unstructured jacket, sans padding. IMO they are more casual than a structured jacket and made of lighter material - think linen - so a good fit is important.

It's usually meant to hold the squared shape of the shoulder to give the man a "cleaner line". Jackets that don't have it can make the shoulder look rounded, which can be perceived as frumpy, bad posture, etc.

Good to know, thanks. I've hardly ever warn jackets, but I find the padding to feel weird, and I don't like the way it looks.
