"NBC ordered two versions of the scene be shot—one in which Kirk and Uhura kissed and one in which they did not. Having filmed the former version of the scene, Shatner and Nichols deliberately flubbed every take of the latter version, forcing the episode to go out with the kiss intact."

I read at one point that Shatner deliberately messed up alternate takes that "hid" the interracial kiss by having Kirk turn his head as he kissed Uhura, specifically so that they'd be forced to show the actual kiss.

In response to Dave Plus Coffee (he/him).
Star Trek: pissing racists off since it's inception.

The current neckbeard fans just ignore all of this ever happened. To them it's just white guys, snd some other unimportant people I guess, explore and control space.

A large chunk of my moral compass comes from Star Trek TOS, due to its focus on fairness, tolerance, and celebrating diversity. Anyone who thinks these things aren't essential parts of Star Trek's DNA are just there for the shooting and explosions, and they're invited to get over themselves 👍
