Wikipedia link broke, but check here for more background, including a quote from Nichelle Nichols about shooting the scene:

Dave Plus Coffee (he/him) @davepluscoffee
"NBC ordered two versions of the scene be shot—one in which Kirk and Uhura kissed and one in which they did not. Having filmed the former version of the scene, Shatner and Nichols deliberately flubbed every take of the latter version, forcing the episode to go out with the kiss intact."

Shatner can be a real horse's ass, but this really shows how awesome the whole cast were. I love TOS so, so much, in no small part because of what a hopeful vision of the future it is.

I've watched interviews with him, it's so hard to tell whether he really actually has a ridiculously giant ego, or if he just plays into that perception by being humorously absurd about it. I think probably more of the former, maybe a bit of the latter. TOS was very exciting, when I was a kid 🍿

Agreed, although the cast seemed equally divided on him. I think he and Nimoy eventually ironed things out, at least. Man, every day after school was homework then Star Trek. The best!

IDK how many times I've seen every episode. Lots & lots. I have all three seasons on blu-ray, my sets have both the remastered versions (which are gorgeous & amazing) and the original broadcast versions. Sometimes I go back and watch the originals, for nostalgia, and my reaction is always: oh, my 🍿
