When I migrated by blog over to Substack, not all of my posts made it (in fact, nothing from after April of last year did). That was annoying, but it was also an opportunity to revisit these old posts.

This one was written in May, and since then the Biden Administration has relaxed its emphasis on a "Democracies vs. Autocracies" dichotomy.

In my view, this is partly because it made it awkward to facilitate normalization between Israel and the Gulf States and the maintenance of a coalition to counter Iranian influence in the Middle East.

I still think the downsides of such an approach were oversold, and a clear framing of American ideals is very important. Rational self-interest is one driver of the behavior of states, but we also must consider the human element and the role of inspirational leadership.

At the moment, American foreign policy lacks a compelling vision for the future, and mostly reacts to crises as they emerge. That needs to change.
