1987; Romania - My world view shattered.

I realized I had been among those shouting "Tyranny" at inconvenient laws. This might have continued, had I not seen what a quiet little tyranny looks like, reflected in the silent, darkened eyes of its victims.

A baker sold me some local bread. With no language in common, both of us laughing over the exchange, by the end.

The next day he was beaten for speaking with an American sailor, and failing to report it.

He sat in his closed shop, staring out the window.
He could do nothing.

Neither could I.
