Recently I have noticed, more & more, that people seem to be misusing the term "gaslight". It has a very specific meaning & a history of how the term came about. But, people seem to be using as if all it means is "to manipulate" which it doesn't.

The film is a psychological thriller directed by George Cukor and is based on the play "Gas Light" by Patrick Hamilton. The story follows a young woman named Paula who starts to doubt her sanity after her husband manipulates her and tries to convince her that she is going mad.

The term "gaslighting" actually originated from this film, as the husband uses gas lights in their home to make them flicker and then denies that anything is wrong, causing Paula to question her own perception of reality.

So, what exactly does it mean "to gaslight" someone?
Gaslighting is a form of psychological manipulation in which a person seeks to sow seeds of doubt in a targeted individual or in members of a targeted group, making them question their own memory, perception, or sanity.

Some movies that depict gaslighting include "Gaslight" from 1944, which is where the term originated, "Sleeping with the Enemy" from 1991, and "Gone Girl" from 2014. These films illustrate how psychological manipulation is used to control and confuse the characters.
