Abusive people don't abuse everyone. Their victims aren't always abused in the same manner either.

So just because you say someone was "always nice" to you doesn't mean they didn't seek ways to exert power and control over others.

In families, often the abuser may choose one child to abuse while being loving towards other kids in the household

In workplaces, too. If you work with an abusive boss/manager long enough, you get to watch them abuse one person until that person leaves, and then they choose a new target, until they finally get to you. 😒
