Also, The Vietnam War had been going on since Kennedy sent military advisors in 1962, I think it was. Johnson escalated the war, thinking that's what Kennedy would have wanted, to preserve democracy in the region. Johnson created the circumstances of his own failure.

Do not forget that Humphrey was Johnson's VP, and for the longest time, he campaigned saying precious little to distance himself from Johnson's policies. It was only AFTER he decided to change his rhetoric about the war and attack Nixon on his lack of policies, that he did better, but far too late.

1968 and 2024 are light-years apart. The demonstrations on college campuses had been going on for YEARS; many were organized by NATIONAL groups, who coordinated messaging and so on. J. Edgar Hoover was a catalyst for a lot of the violence that occurred, as he tried to undermine these organizations.
