Things changed for me in about sixth grade. In Minnesota, a boy about my age was abducted in a small town nearby, never to be heard from again. Just a few years ago, they convicted the murderer. But I went from free range to monitored in a hurry.

I'm solidly gen x and this stereotype has always confused me. I wasn't allowed out of my yard, much less to wander freely. Most of the people I went to school with weren't allowed much freedom either. Maybe it's a geographic/demographic thing?

Back then, it was few and far between that we heard about kids getting kidnapped/murdered. Not that it didn't happen, we did have milk cartons with the faces of missing kids on them.
