We tend to tune out what is normal. That explains a lot in our current politics — why there is less outrage than one would like there to be, why it is so exhausting to remain vigilant, etc. — but it cuts both ways, too. We tune out every-day sources of insight. Like from Steve Schmidt.

Today Steve picked up on something from Las Vegas mayoral candidate Kara Jenkins that almost went right by me. it is especially simple, almost jingoistic. Ms Jenkins summarizes her mission as seeing that everyone gets a fair shot. That “Nobody ever gets dealt a card from the bottom of the deck.”

I needed that thought! I’ve never come up with the suitable come-back for accusations hurled by MAGA that I am unrealistic (sometimes, yes, idealistic is sometimes that) or, more often, a bleeding heart. Such accusations usually involve gross exaggeration and a pejorative label (like “socialist”).

Kara’s statement not only gives me the perfect retort, it provides a simple, accurate test for the presence of MAGA perversion in political thought. It’s the essential difference between Democrats and Republicans at this time in history, politically, environmentally, socioeconomically.

MAGA see winning as an end to itself (and losing as the ultimate shame). Economically and politically, they gerrymander, intimidate, and cheat to win. Democrats see winning as a means to find real winners.

Because the ideal of America is simple. Nobody ever gets dealt from the bottom of the deck.
