Across the entire history of humankind, clean, year-round available ice for drinks has only been available to the non-wealthy for about 80 years. I couldn't imagine life without it.

You better not travel abroad then. Very few other countries offer ice at all. It's simply not available. Some places lack refrigeration or reliable electricity, or the tap water is unsafe, but mostly, it seems to be cultural habit. Some still believe using ice would give you a cold!

I've traveled extensively in Asia and Europe and seen ice everywhere. However, I will admit I've always been in hotels and restaurants that cater to westerners. I don't doubt your assertion once you leave those confines.

You're right that you can get ice in upscale hotels and restaurants that cater to American tourists, but rarely anywhere else. I've traveled the world, and I have desperately, futilely, searched for ice for pain relief (for a recurring condition) while traveling. I did find a snowbank once....
