Some people make them from dirt collected on their travels as a wonderful memento of places they have been.

There is no certainty where this originated from or exactly how old the practice is.

The process seems very meditative.

I recall something like this from the TV show Mythbusters. They were trying to prove/disprove some popular idioms.
Although collections and polishing earth from places you visit sounds cool.
