Chocolate was invented in Mexico, where the first cacao plants were domesticated by the Olmec, then further developed by the Mayas and the Mexica. The Mayas called it "chocolhaa," which means "bitter water," and the Mexica called it "xocolatl."

As early as the year 500 bce, the Mayas were drinking chocolate made from ground up cocoa seeds mixed with water, cornmeal, and chili peppers (as well as other ingredients) - a much different version from the hot chocolate we know today. 😋🍩🍮🥮
