Didn't know I'd need a caveat on this, but if you physically cannot return a cart, this does not apply to you. After I broke both legs and was on crutches or a cane, I put my carts back, but not everyone can.

I'm more curious.

Folks with mobility issues sometimes use carts like they would a walker. It doesn't mean they have the capacity to cross a lot and walk back without aid.

And I often place young folks with no job experience in roles where they collect carts. Abandoned carts are work for them.

There's also the people who park their cart in the center of an aisle, blocking traffic in both directions, while they decide which canned green beans to get.
A special place in hell awaits them.

Supermarkets/shopping malls here don't actually want you putting away your carts, they have dedicated staff for this. Some parking lots are huge, people pushing their carts around themselves create congestion and often smash into parked cars.
