⚖️ In 1867, #FrederickDouglass spoke in favor of #Chinese #immigrants in his #TheCompositeNation speech. This is astonishing because anti-Asian sentiment and violence was at all time high.

In the 1850s, Asians were less than .002% of the U.S. population but were blamed for white labor shortages and seen as a threat to white racial purity in the nation. The #Chinese were #lynched and many #Chinatowns were burnt to the ground. #TheChineseMustGo #YellowPeril

Many racists laws against Asians would be passed, leading to the #ChineseExclusionAct in #1882 . To me, Mr. Douglass took great risk to himself for speaking up so courageously for a small and vulnerable people. #Solidarity

It is (not) shocking to see the racist imagery and supremacist ideological spew. I mean it is literally the same evil ass message for any group that's not white.
