“Inside is bright. Outside is bright. Wherever it is, it is bright. What is it?” says Ko Bong. Gold when it’s in the ground is bright, even if covered with dirt. Gold in a furnace is bright, but can’t be touched. When it comes out of the furnace, it can be worked into any shape.

When our practice is easy, it is bright. When our practice isn’t easy, is it still bright? Or do we become lazy about it, saying we’ll do it tomorrow when the environment is more conducive to practice?

The birds are chirping too loudly, the cushion doesn’t feel right, the incense is bothering my asthma, that guy cut me off in traffic…tomorrow will be better. Maybe better, maybe worse, maybe, maybe, maybe.

Some days it’s roses, some days it’s thorns. Not good, not bad, just different.

But always bright. Opportunities to awaken are all around us. Every gate is a Dharma gate. Comfort is an opportunity, feeling uncomfortable is a Dharma gate. Not better or worse, difficult doesn’t make it more valuable than easy. There’s no extra credit, no points for degree of difficulty.
