Why Isn’t This Map in the History Books?

By the age of 10, most children in the United States have been taught all 50 states that make up the country.

But centuries ago, the land that is now the United States was a very different place.

I think I may have seen a map like this for 5 seconds in HS. Very glossed over until uni. I was a history minor and basic early American history still barely touched indigenous people. Had to take a Native American studies course just to get what I felt were basics. It was sad.

I’m so old there was zero mention of Indigenous peoples in history classes. Also old enough that that the vibe of Natives people in West TX & Northeren Chihuahua & south NM still throbbed strong. No denying the history of these lands.

I went to HS in Colorado and my family took a vacation and traveled to southern CO one summer. We saw some amazing Pueblo cliff dwellings in Mesa Verde National Park. It was awe inspiring. I think that sparked my interest I knowing more about western tribes.
